Mission Statement:
The mission of Hunger Fighters is to help cure hunger.

We are committed to fighting hunger of the whole person in earth-friendly ways.

The most significant earth-friendly way to have an impact is to increase the number of Triple Bottom Line organizations: Those for-profit, not-for-profit, and governmental enterprises which use impact on people, planet, and profits/revenues as their success indicators.

Therefore, in order to help cure hunger:

- Establish Hunger Fighters as the premier community of expertise, information, advice, models, product and service providers, to encourage initiation, development, and/or growth of triple bottom line organizations.

- Enable visitors to donate food to the hungry by clicking a Hunger Fighter button.

- Link with the egrocer industry to promote a triple bottom line alternative to the bricks and mortar grocery shopping experience.

- Buy, sell, and use earth-friendly products.

- Support partners, affiliates, suppliers, in their efforts to be socially and environmentally responsible while making a profit.

- Achieve profitability, which is a measure of the service being valued and which assures our ability to sustain the delivery of high quality service.

- Encourage for-profit, not-for-profit, and governmental organizations to develop for themselves and others triple bottom line measures of their impact on profits, people, and the planet.

Guidelines for Hunger Fighters operation include:

A. Contracting out when possible for efficiency benefits.
B. Contracting out to those engaged in process of solving social need -- e.g., job training for developmentally challenged or unemployed.
C. Operating with low fixed costs which translates to having virtual offices and employees until revenue streams justify or necessitate a change.
D. Synergistically building on existing resources; creating win-win situations rather than developing own resources.
E. Celebrating actions and activities taken by our stakeholders (people, planet, community) that help in the long-term cure of hunger of the whole person in earth-friendly ways.
F. Recycle, renew, replenish, develop, conserve, promote, reward, and celebrate people and the planet.
G. Attract triple bottom line sponsors and advertisers who clearly see the value of the mission and see the benefit of being closely linked with and supporting such a resource.

Thank you for helping fight hunger of the whole person in earth friendly ways.!

Status Report April The White Dog Cafe of Philadelphia and Fare Start in Seattle had been nominated as Model Organizations. Harriet presented Judy Wicks of the White Dog Cafe with a laminated front page of Hungerfighters.com celebrating the selection of the White Dog Cafe as a model triple bottom line organization. For the photo of that event, check out.

April 15 We acquired www.DailyThoughts.org with whom we had been working closely for several months. In addition to receiving a Daily Thought with your email reminder (if you have the nifty html version so you can enjoy the photos) we send cards to Daily Thought subscribers. For each card sent, a free cup of food is donated to America's Second Harvest. Go to www.DailyThoughts.org and share the post cards with your friends or relatives.

May 7 America 's Second Harvest received a donation check from Hara Publishingfor the equivalent of 44,800 cups of food as a Hunger Fighter sponsor. This included 28,328 cups of food for Hunger Fighters and 9655 cups for DailyThoughts.org from April 15-30. This included, in addition, 6817 predonation cups for May. We are the only click to donate site that has paid for cups donated before the clicks were made. Thanks, Hara!

Check out Hara's Bookstore on Hunger Fighters Hara Bookstore Help us increase the numbers of cups donated. We really need your help. You could visit one more day a week if you are notvisiting daily now. You could email a friend about www.hungerfighters.com which is good for one cup of food. You could send a Daily Thought to someone daily. You could drop down on the Hunger Fighters' home page to click on The Hunger Site to donate an additional cup when you click through on The Hunger Site if you are not already including that click.

National Hunger Awareness Day, June 5, 2002. Great opportunity to thank you for your cups of food you are enabling to be donated through www.Hungerfighters.com.

Please let us know how we can get the word out! And, if you have any feedback you would like to give us, please send to:info@hungerfighters.com.

We need to get the numbers up in order to get sponsors who will pay for the food that is being donated. The larger numbers mean more food to feed the hungry and more sponsors to pay for the food. These are critical times for food banks. Summers tend to be slower for the supplies. Yet the demand is higher than ever.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE FIGHT ON HUNGER!

Warm regards,
The Hunger Fighting Team

Pain Management For Hungerfighters:

There are an estimated 50 million Americans living with chronic pain. There are 25 million more a year with acute pain from injury or surgery. Pain causes up to $100 billion each year in medical costs and lost work.

One of the most powerful tools for dealing with pain may be movement. 'Pain is not a valid reason for not being fit' according to Dr. J. David Sinclair. 'The quickest way to get over any injury is to use it' according to Thomas Williamson-Kirkland an M.D. in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.

In addition to movement, attitude seems to be an important factor. 'The best thing you can do for back pain is to be happy,' says Stan Herring, an M.D. with Puget Sound Sports and Spine Physicians in Seattle and team physician for the Seattle Seahawks. 'Because if you're happy, whatever injury or illness comes your way, you're going to handle it better.' (quotes from article, 'A Moving Target ' in annual fitness issue of Pacific Northwest Magazine, ' Seattle Times, June 9, 2002--Molly Martin) So....let's get and stay fit.

Take the fitness pledge each day on www.hungerfighters.com while you are donating cups of food to the hungry. It will make you feel so good and you will feel happier while you are exercising and afterward. You should be happier too from the knowledge that you are probably going to live longer with a better quality of life than if you didn't exercise. Click to email a friend about www.hungerfighters.com. Click to email a Daily Thought to a friend to donate additional cups of food.

We realize there are no simple answers to pain. It does look like movement/fitness/happiness/mental attitude play important roles in the healing process for many. For further information: The American Pain Foundation, www.painfoundation.org; and The National Pain Foundation 's online education and support community: www.painconnection.org.

Special thoughts and appreciation to the Fathers and those fulfilling the role. May you know you play a critical role in the health and well being fight against the hunger of the whole person. We commend you!

Happy Fathers Day.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE FIGHT ON HUNGER!

Hungerfighters.com newsletter--September 03, 2002

Thank you for helping fight hunger of the whole person in earth friendly ways!

You are clearly on the right track. Food is needed now!
It is vital to the health and well being of our society for its citizens to have adequate food and nutrition. This is not happening now. August 15, 2000, The Center on Hunger and Poverty released “Hunger and Food Insecurity in the Fifty States: 1998-2000”.

“Over 11 million households containing more than 33 million individuals in the United States reported limited or uncertain access to sufficient food due to inadequate resources. Nearly 3.3 million of these households reported hunger…. Seven states accounted for nearly half (49.4%) of all individuals living in food insecure households; California, Texas, and Florida accounted for nearly a third.” http://www.centeronhunger.org
The tremendous costs of food insecurity and hunger especially among our children were clearly presented in a report from the Center in June 2002, “The Consequences of Hunger and Food Insecurity for Children”. 1. Poorer overall health status; 2. Sick more often; 3. Much more likely to have ear infections; 4. Have higher rates of iron deficiency anemia; and 5. Are hospitalized more frequently. This is accompanied by emotional and behavioral impacts with “at-risk children being more likely to have poorer mental health, be withdrawn or socially disruptive, and suggest greater rates of behavioral disorders.” “Even moderate nutritional vulnerability, the kind often seen among 13 million high-risk children in the U.S. can impede cognitive development and impair their capacities over a lifetime…that extends to the nation in terms of higher rates of school failure, poorer returns on our educational investments, and weakened workforce productivity when children reach the age of employment”.

America's Second Harvest's Kids Café is just one of the many reasons HungerFighters focuses its support on America's Second Harvest. It has has the system and procedures to serve food banks in all states, it has the developed recycle processes and partnerships to get surplus food to those who need. It is meeting the critical short term daily needs while helping find the long-term solutions. The Kids Café is one of the nation's largest free meal service programs for children. In more than 600 Kids Cafes operated by more than 80 food banks across the nation free and prepared food and nutrition education are offered to hungry children. Some Kids Cafes also offer a safe place for involvement in educational, recreational and social activities. http://www.secondharvest.org/childhunger/kidscafe.html

America's Second Harvest Community Kitchens program is being featured now as three students are followed through the powerful hunger relief program. The program uses surplus food to teach skills in the culinary arts, safe food handling and job readiness to inviduals who have been unemployed. The food these students prepare is then used to help feed hungry Americans. Upon graduation, many students are able to secure stable, higher-paying jobs in the food service industry. http://www.secondharvest.org/newsroom/feature/ck_weeks13.html

Click on the fitness pledge www.hungerfighters.com and start or keep doing your exercise. Thank you for helping fight hunger of the whole person in earth friendly ways!

Many thanks to our members and visitors who share their photos and favorite quotations with us for Daily Thoughts. Thank you for keeping us informed about happenings that our visitors might like to be informed. Feel free to tell us about articles, resources, exercises, trends, companies or individuals you 'd like to recommend we talk to about sponsoring. info@HungerFighters.com

Betty Konarski, Ed.D, Mayor of Monument, Colorado gave a gift of chickens in my name www.Heifer.org. I was delighted to know that a gift in my name would make such a difference in someone's life for years to come. In the December 2001 issue of Worth magazine, Heifer International: Ending Hunger & Poverty was selected as one of the top 100 Best Charities in the country. "Heifer has helped 4 million families in 115 countries move toward self-sufficiency by giving them one of 25 types of breeding livestock for plowing power or food and income (from milk or eggs). Families spend a year in training and agree to pass on the first female animal offspring and their own know-how to other needy families." We followed through at Hunger Fighters by giving a gift of a Heifer and a flock of geese in the name of our Team.

Good-News Trend: Far Fewer Americans Have Disabilities in Old Age. A study out of Duke University showed that the percentage of Americans age 65 and older with chronic disabilities fell 1.6 percent a year from l989 through 1994 and 2.6 percent a year from l994 through l999. AARP reports US nursing homes have roughly 500,000 fewer residents than would have been expected had rates of use held steady over the past 20 years. In addition to almost half a million senior citizens enjoying better quality of life, consumers, taxpayers, relatives and society as a whole benefit immensely. The cost of nursing home care is an average of $56,000 a year! Why the decline? Lots of possibilities but one Harvard Study found "that the most reliable predictors of good health in old age are an absence of alcohol abuse, nonsmoking, a healthy weight and a stable marriage at age 50". www.AARP.org has good information and resources including some free on-line courses such as "Get Movin' At 50 Plus"

Delivery of food (groceries, meals) to mobility challenged individuals will enable people to live longer and more independently, in their own homes. Also, grocery delivery can save time, cut down on pollution, and enhance the quality of life for those who find grocery shopping to be a real drag. We felt that grocery delivery was an integral part of the Hunger Fighters strategy. GROCERSCHOICE is a registered trademark of GROCERSCHOICE.COM, INC You will notice a relatively new face, since July, on the grocery delivery scene in New York City, www.FreshDirect.com If this is an indication of things to come, grocery delivery may be experiencing a rebirth and/or movement out of adolescence. Fresh Direct promises higher quality at lower prices. Check out our E-grocer Locator to find who delivers groceries in your area. The GrocersChoice E-grocer Locator is the only up-to-date source we know of. Please check it out. If a grocer is delivering or starts delivering in your area who is not in our directory, please let us know. info@hungerfighters.com

The global Hunger picture in 2002 did not appear to be better than it was when the US committed to achieving the goals of the l996 World Food Summit. The US had set a domestic goal of reducing hunger at home by half by the year 2010. See US Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman presents U.S. Anti-Hunger Goals, June 10, 2002 www.usembassy.it/file2002_06/alia/a2061009.htm Globally, "the challenges we face include chronic hunger, recurring famines, and serious nutritional deficiencies…Worldwide, some 800 million people are food insecure…"

Domestically, Hunger was a major topic in the news media-"The New face of Hunger in US" Food banks, pantries, and soup kitchens are trying to respond to a demand for food up 25 to 30 percent from 2001 when 23.3 million people sought assistance. Soaring demand seemed to be accompanied by cash donations down an estimated 50 percent in some areas. The economy is given a lot of the blame with places such as New York City having a "hunger crisis". To help out in the short run, keep those clicks going on the Donation Center www.Hungerfighters.com; email a friend about Hunger Fighters; become a sponsor of Hunger Fighters or www.DailyThoughts.org and/or, recruit a sponsor.

"Obesity in America is worse than ever … 6 in 10 are overweight; health fallout is feared" (USA Today October 9, 2002) The double-edged sword of the fight on hunger is always with us. While hunger is causing 25-30 million to seek assistance, more than 120 million people are overweight or obese. (Obese is defined as 30 or more pounds over a healthy body weight. Overweight is roughly 10-30 pounds over a healthy body weight.) "Being overweight has been linked to an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, some types of cancer, arthritis and other health problems". There may be some overlap in numbers of hungry and obese. This is a good time to dig out the information on the value of exercise. Exercise is an integral part of the Hunger Fighters strategy. Take the fitness pledge to exercise 30 minutes a day. It is right next to the Donation Center. Walking seems to be a universal answer to helping with weight and mental attitude. The faster the walking the better. Just doing it at any speed is better than nothing. On the Hunger Fighters home page in the far left offerings, check out the "active travel" link which will take you to www.CountryWalkers.com. If you are looking for the perfect vacation that includes exercise with great local foods with an organization that is a triple bottom line business that has a policy of "giving back" to the places it walks-check it out.

Remember to TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF WHILE HELPING OTHERS! You need you and they need you! Peace, good health, and good will to all in 2003.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE FIGHT ON HUNGER!

The Hunger Fighters E-Newsletter #6 December 16, 2003

Thank you for helping fight hunger of the whole person in earth friendly ways!

December is a season for many holidays including Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. (Let us know which ones we've left out-it is unintentional) This newsletter will address an issue which gains importance during this time that is especially relevant to fighting hunger of the whole person in earth friendly ways: Gifts that might nourish the giver, receiver, and provider and hopefully respect the people, profit, and planet. The gifts range the entire cost spectrum from virtually no time or money to lots of time and money and most would be appropriate year round and would improve the likelihood of there being a future in which to celebrate. If you would let us know of other ideas to include, we will include those in section of Hunger Fighters to share with others. harriet@HungerFighters.com

Gifts of the heart--potentially life-impacting non or minimal financial outlay. Practice Random Acts of Kindness regularly. Join with a free membership in The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation which "is a resource for people committed to spreading kindness." www.actsofkindness.org While I was feasting my eyes on the items to sample a most appropriate quotation cycled by: "People will forget what you said, People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." - Bonnie Jean Wasmund www.Beliefnet.com which lists "unique spiritual holiday gifts" has an an article "Improving your Family Get-Togethers" by Leonard Felder, Ph.D. which is particularly timely and might be worth a quick look
http:///www.beliefnet.com/story/136/story_13694_1.html. One of the recommendations is "Experience Gratitude" (for each small grain of progress). Looks like gratitude and its expressions can be gifts of and for the heart of oneself and others. Jane Lampman writes in the November 27-28, 2003 issue of The Christian Science Monitor, "A universal experience and a component of many religious traditions for centuries, gratitude is being recognized not simply as a desirable virtue, but also as an essential element to wholeness and well-being." A gift for ourselves could be to keep a gratitude journal on a regular basis. Lampman quotes Dr Emmons, a professor at the University of California involved in the field of positive psychology which focuses on the strengths of human beings." '…the simple act of keeping a gratitude journal on a regular basis seems to have so many different effects…People feel closer to God, sleep better, feel more connected to others, and make more progress toward important personal goals.' They also report fewer symptoms of illness and higher levels of energy than do those in control groups." A couple of books that might fall in this category would include Lynne Twist's THE SOUL OF MONEY in which she challenges the reader" …to hold money as a common trust that we're all responsible for using in ways that nurture and empower us, and all life, our planet, and all future generations." There is a dynamite chapter "What You Appreciate Appreciates". "…appreciation becomes a powerful, intentional practice of creating new value through our deliberate attention to the value of what we already have. Our attention enlarges and enriches our experience of whatever is before us."" Josh Baran's, 365 NIRVANA HERE AND NOW has food for thought to get one going such as one you will be seeing on the January 26 www.dailythoughts.org : "…walk around today saying to yourself a few times per hour, 'this is miraculous'. No matter what is happening, say this. Just notice how this outlook changes how you relate to the everyday experiences." For yourself or for someone else, consider Selected Quotes from His Holiness the Dalai Lama by Margaret Gee in the WORDS OF WISDOM 2004 Calender from Andrews McMeel Publishing. "Today more and more people are realizing that the proper way to resolve differences is through dialogue, compromise, and negotiation, through human understanding and humility. This means that there will no longer be outright winners, but nor will there be total losers".
